Motion Graphic Designer/Producer

The American Chemical Society’s video production team has an exciting opportunity available for a Producer/Motion Graphics Designer to join our team.  This incumbent will primarily animate and edit videos for the ACS video series Reactionsyoutube.com/acsreactions, a show that uncovers the chemistry in the world around us.  This series, which is a part of PBS Digital Studios, covers topics that range from how Xanax works, to the chemistry of cats, to why coffee makes you poop.  We have 555,000+ subscribers and 47+ million views on YouTube and Facebook. Additional responsibilities in this role include serving as a producer on studio and location shoots. 
 
This is a full-time, approximately 5 month contract position in Washington, DC, beginning as soon as possible and extending through May 2019.  Near the end of this time period we will begin searching for a candidate to permanently fill this role.  We welcome the person who fills this contract position to apply for the permanent position.
 
Position Responsibilities: 
80% of your time will be spent producing short animated and live action science explainer videos from start to finish.  This includes:
 
  • Identifying, sourcing, designing, and/or creating graphics, animations, images or footage, sound effects, music, and any other elements to fully and effectively support the story and explain the science as written in the script and voiced in the voiceover. 
  • Working with ACS Productions fact checkers and internal/external expert reviewers to ensure that all graphics, animations, stock images or footage, sound effects, music, and all other elements in each video are scientifically accurate.
  • Working with the scriptwriter and executive producer to ensure that each video tells a clear, compelling, and effective story.
  • Assuming responsibility for delivering a high-quality product on time.
 
20% of your time will be spent serving as a producer on studio and location shoots. 
 
Knowledge/Skills Required:
  • BA/BS degree, preferably in motion graphic design, animation, film, or a related field.  
  • At least 2 years of professional experience as a Motion Graphic Designer
  • At least 2 years of professional experience working as a Producer
  • Must be able to design and animate in the Reactions series style
  • Ability to edit live action video and integrate motion graphics with live footage
  • Ability to conceptualize, design, and bring creative ideas into the video
  • Must have the ability to work from a script to storyboard projects and translate ideas to team members
  • Ability to work with the team to accurately and visually explain scientific concepts in videos
  • Advanced knowledge of Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop, and Illustrator
  • An interest in science communication, particularly chemistry
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at once and meet deadlines
  • Must be a team player 
  • Must be self-motivated and proactive
